Located just 70 miles east of Kilgore, the third-largest urban area in the state of Louisiana is a fantastic day trip destination for those looking for the most authentic Southern hospitality and a plethora of local attractions and family-friendly activities. Founded in the early 19th century, Shreveport is home to a charming downtown area full of historical homes and buildings worth checking out.

If you are lucky enough to visit the city in late October, you will have the opportunity to attend the State Fair of Louisiana, which features the largest livestock show and carnival in the state. Other local attractions you should not miss while in the city include the Spring Street Historical Museum, Jubilee Zoo, and the Logan Mansion.

2. Sabine National Forest

Covering a total area of more than 160,000 acres, Sabine National Forest is located right by the Louisiana state line and approximately 115 miles southeast of downtown Kilgore. Known for its sprawling hardwood forests, this scenic nature reserve was developed by the Civilian Conservation Corps and opened its doors to the public in 1936, drawing visitors from all over the region throughout the year.

Featuring a large campground, picnic pavilions, an amphitheater, fire lookout towers, and plenty of nature trails, Sabine National Forest is an excellent destination for a day trip from Kilgore. Driving here takes less than two hours via route TX-87.
