1. Texas Blueberry Festival

Just about an hour away from Kilgore is nearby Nacogdoches, the Texas Blueberry Festival is well worth the drive. This early-June festival has been going strong for 33 years, with a packed calendar of events, including a free concert in Festival Park, the Running of the Blueberries, parades, and cooking competitions.

Primarily located in Festival Plaza, at 507 S. Pecan St. in the heart of Nacogdoches, the Texas Blueberry Festival is a unique tribute to one of the state’s favorite fruits. Plan to spend at least a full day participating in activities and sampling all of the delicious blueberries. You’ll undoubtedly drive away with plenty of tasty goodies, souvenirs, and memories that will last you for several summers.

2. Texas Shakespeare Festival 

Check out the Texas Shakespeare Festival at Kilgore College’s TSF Performance Venue, 1200 Henderson Blvd. You’ll find world-class dramas and comedies nearly every night, including Comedy of Errors, Something Rotten, and King Lear. This festival has been going on strong since the 1980s. Since then, it’s had a long and proud history of honoring Shakespeare with skilled actors and incredible sets.

Many of the performances are kid-friendly, so don’t be afraid to bring the whole family down for a spectacular tribute to The Bard that’s bound to be one of the highlights of your summer. It’s also a great activity for couples or literature lovers who simply want to see Shakespeare’s work brought to life in glorious form.

3. Andina Fest

Celebrate East Texas Latin heritage at Andina Fest: a huge family-friendly party in nearby Tyler. It’s only half an hour from Kilgore, conveniently and centrally located at Rose Garden Center, 420 Rose Park Dr. Andina Fest takes place on July 15 starting at 11 a.m., and you and your family will enjoy a full, festive day of music, food, and special kid’s activities. Live music acts include Mariachis, Hora Loca, and Batucada. You don’t have to venture far outside Kilgore to discover unique local festivals and awesome summertime fun for the whole family, but you’ll need a fantastic ride to get you there.
