Indulge in much-deserved breaks on weekend getaways from Kilgore, TX in the comfort of a spacious Chevy Equinox, Blazer, or Tahoe. Spend a few days on the shores of one of the largest lakes in the state, go on a safari in the beautiful North Texas Hill Country, and stick your toes in the sand along the Gulf of Mexico.

1. Lone Star Lodge and Marina

Take a well-deserved break at Lone Star Lodge and Marina at 2200 FM 1192 Pilot Point, just under three hours away. The beautiful lodge is perched high on a ridge tucked away between the trees in Ray Roberts State Park, overlooking the vast 26,000-acre Ray Roberts Lake. Stay over in one of the Western-style suites or cabins with spectacular views of the woodlands and lake and spend a leisurely weekend boating and fishing.

The marina rents kayaks and pontoon boats, and the lake is an excellent fishing spot for hooking largemouth and white bass, blue and channel catfish, sunfish, and crappie. Explore the park on more than 20 miles of hiking, mountain biking, and horseback riding trails through the prairies and dense cedar, elm, and oak groves, offering shelter to 229 species of birds, and catch glimpses of deer, bobcats, coyotes, foxes, and beavers along the way.

2. Hidden Lake RV Ranch and Safari

Pack your camping gear in the Chevy and head three and a half hours down the road to go on a weekend safari and camping adventure in the beautiful North Texas Hill Country at Hidden Lake RV Ranch and Safari at 3100 Lowrance Road in Jacksboro. Pitch your tent in the tree-lined campground at a full hookup tent site on the shores of Hidden Lake and go on a safari tour looking for exotic animals in scenic surroundings.

Enjoy the peace and tranquility, paddling on the secluded lake and wetting your hook to catch bass, crappie, perch, and catfish. Play games of volleyball, badminton, croquet, horseshoes, and bocce ball, and get comfy at your campsite after dark sitting around roaring campfires under the stars.

3. Galveston Island

Take a four-hour drive to Galveston Island to enjoy a weekend on the sandy sun-soaked shores and splashing around in the azure blue waters of the Gulf of Mexico. There is so much to see and do, from admiring the historic Victorian architecture, thrilling rides at Pleasure Pier, and enjoying spills at the Schlitterbahn Waterpark to uncovering the secrets underwater and in the rainforests at Moody Gardens and going on a deep-sea fishing excursion.

The 2,000-acre Galveston Island State Park is a must-visit destination, protecting the Gulf Coast barrier island ecosystem, the island’s last untouched natural habitat. Walk down the boardwalk to the observation platform to admire the coastal scenery, and hike and bike down the trails to spot wading and shorebirds, armadillos, marsh rabbits, and raccoons.
