Chevy Silverado ZRX

NEW: Updated for 2020!

There are some things that Chevy fans know for sure. One of those things is that Fords always fall a little (or a lot) short of what Chevys offer. That’s certainly true in the rumored upcoming Chevy Silverado ZRX. This off-road monster will be, in some ways, Ford Raptor-esque, but in normal Chevy fashion, the ZRX designers plan to take things to the next level—and off-road truck enthusiasts have already taken notice.

Silverado ZRX Vs. Chevy Silverado: What Will Be Different?

It’s tough to say for sure until final details about the 2022 Silverado ZRX are announced from Chevy, but we have some clues.

The chatter started in 2019 with a simple IG post from Chevrolet Performance, in which they announced that a Chevy off-road truck, a modified Silverado, was going to compete in the Best in Desert Competition. This off-road race includes grueling conditions and Chevy took the top prize in past competitions with their ZR2.

This entry will include a beefed-up Silverado that some say is a prototype for a 2022 release of a Chevy off-road truck called the Chevy Silverado ZRX.

Updates to the prototype included:

  • 35” Off-Road Tires
  • Tough Front Skid Plate
  • Multimatic Dynamic Suspension
  • Specially Designed Rear Shock Skids
  • Redesigned Front and Rear Bumpers to Enhance Clearance
  • Front and Rear Electronic Differentials

2022 Chevrolet Silverado ZRX Specs: Enough To Challenge Ford Raptor?

Of course, all of this is still speculation at this point, which opens the door for off-road enthusiasts to daydream about what they want to see when this 2022 truck finally rolls off the line.

Here’s what many enthusiast hope to see from this truck in the future:

  • Bigger Engine (The 6.2-liter V8 is great, but off-roaders want more HP, natch.)
  • 700+ HP to challenge to Ford Raptor and Ram Rebel TRX
  • Long-Travel Suspension
  • Heavy-Duty Winch
  • Low Ground Pressure
  • More Powerful Lighting
  • Better Approach and Departure Angles
  • Available Diesel Engine

So is this a realistic wish list option? There is evidence that the answer is yes: In another IG post, Chevrolet Performance wrote, “Our goal with the Best in the Desert competition is to push the engineering and development of the Colorado platform in the most extreme conditions imaginable.”

Can the 2022 Chevrolet Silverado ZRX Compete Vs. the Ford Raptor?

That begs the question: Will the Chevy ZRX kill the Raptor? History may have the answer. In past Best in Desert competitions, Chevy’s ZR2 handily bested the Raptor (and Wranglers and Dune Buggies)—and the Chevy ZRX may offer even more impressive features than the ZR2.

Chevy is using the race for testing out updates before they hit the market, so there will be no wondering about performance as you’ll have seen it handle some of the most difficult terrain imaginable.

When will the Chevy Silverado ZRX Be Released?

You might have to wait until 2022 or beyond to go off-road in a Chevy Silverado ZRX, but the modified Silverado aiming to take first place in the upcoming Best in Desert may give you a glimpse of what the future holds.
